Coaching has its roots in many therapies, and helping professions, and through this lends itself to being a versatile and adaptable intervention for development. Founded in sports coaching and sports psychology, it has grown into a profession that spans life in work and play, and has enabled people to be and do more than they thought possible.
What is it about coaching that makes it so effective? I believe the simplicity of the process coupled with the skill of the coach in working with a person in the place they are, and with whom they are. A coach has no need to change a person, but rather encourages they person t change themselves in a way that is harmonious with their values, their talents and natural potential. This acceptance of the person and the ‘being’ with them as they embark on a journey of self-discovery, learning and change is a powerful experience for both the coach and their client. I can say that since becoming a coach, I have not only learned about others, but also have learned an enormous amount about myself through working with others in this way. I am continually growing and developing in myself, and marveling at the amazing things people do for themselves through the experience of being coached.
Coaching is not without its challenges, and some clients give their coach quite a learning experience too. Sometimes that which is unfamiliar to the coach is the best learning environment for the coach. I am often faced with the question of ‘where shall we go from here?’ In these situations, we learn to hone the discipline and skill of coaching dialogue alongside trusting and believing in the client’s potential when, for instance, we give a client time to be stuck and space to explore what that means and what comes next.
The power of people working together with the right attitude to each other, themselves and the goal of the work, is one that is not just about business, or achieving, or money, or health, or whatever goal is being realised, and is in fact more about the very meaning and purpose of the life of the individuals who take part.
